When I started researching the Olympics, it was for the purpose of determining the economic benefits great enough to improve a country's global presence.

It didn't take long before I realized that basic economic reasoning couldn't explain the reason for hosting the Olympics. There are few economic benefits. But, I did find that there was an increased global presence. This presence could lead to benefits in the future derived from community, acceptance and understanding.

As an advocate for Twitter, I realized that Twitter is representive of a new economy, and boosts the components of community, acceptance and understanding.

I made my own Twitter account, @NewOlympicEcon, focusing on the modern Olympics to find out if an increased positive global presence is possible.

About the Background:

Part of the inspiration behind this project came from my time studying abroad in Rome, Italy. During my time there, I learned about a growing trend in Rome of repurposing old buildings that were once home to many significant events as a reflection of Roman culture. I chose this background of the Colosseum becuase there were rumors that the Colosseum would soon be home to many events, such as speaches and concerts. The Colosseum was also used to bring people throughout the Roman Empire together. Both of these reflect big themes in my research.
